WHAT’S WITH THE PHOTO SELECTION, WORDPRESS??

I started blogging a few months ago and must admit, I absolutely love it!  I love posting my photography.  I love writing.  I love reading your blogs and become excited when you post a comment to mine.  (Thank you for your comments and suggestions!)  I love that WordPress created this opportunity for me and I’ve been totally satisfied with everything they provide to make my blogging days successful.

But, I don’t understand the “cover photo” selection process for my blog post on their Freshly Pressed page.  When I started the blog, I would post my shots in sequence.  After a few posts I thought I noticed a pattern.  It seemed like they would always grab the third photo to use as the “cover photo” on their Freshly Pressed page.  But sometimes, that third shot was not the best shot of the sequence and certainly not a shot I would have chosen.  Thinking it must be an automated system because it didn’t seem logical that someone would actually select some of those shots, I began to make certain that my best shot was the third in the series – even if it placed it out of sequence.  And sure enough, as soon as I did that – the first photo started appearing as the “cover photo” on the Freshly Pressed page.  AGH!  Of course, I realize this may not be important to many of the bloggers in WordPressLand.  But to me, having a photography blog, the photo selection is paramount to attracting readers.

It would seem to be a simple solution to allow the author of the post to select the “cover photo.”  Or at the very least, simply take the same photo every time.  If I knew they were always going to grab the first photo or the third photo, then I could plan for that.  But right now, I can’t seem to ever get the photo I would choose to be the “cover photo.”

I really, really like you WordPress!  I think you do a fantastic job, WordPress!  But, am I missing something, here?  Can anyone shed some light on this process?

Thanks for your help!

Now on to my regularly scheduled post.  (I’ve eliminated the “cover photo” issue this time by only posting one shot.)

I’ve always found church architecture to be fascinating.  I love the steeples and the crosses and the way they’re prominently displayed.

This is Hope Lutheran Church.  I’ve driven past this church dozens of times as it’s very close to my office.  On several occasions I’ve parked and walked around looking for different perspectives because I love the way the cross is framed.  Each time I stopped, something wasn’t quite right.  The sky was too grey and colorless.  The sky was too bland and uninteresting.  The sun was too high washing out all the color.  It seemed like it was always something – until yesterday.  Yesterday was an unusual day for Southern California, in that we had clouds – not haze, not smog, but real white clouds!  Even more unusual was the blue color to the sky!  We don’t get these blue skies too often in the valley in the summertime.

IT WAS – – – – – – – A MIRACLE!!!!

This shot was two months in the making.  My photography lesson today: Never give up!

Thanks for stopping by.  I’ll see you tomorrow.

  1. I think we’ll wait to see if you get a response from WordPress on the issue you mention before weighing in 🙂
On the photograph, Patience is Virtue, I love that you got this great shot and I believe that the wait was worth it! Very very nice work!
    Keep Shooting!

  2. I’m just getting used to the idea that if things aren’t right, wait. I waste a lot of time of trying to ‘right’ photos when the shot just isn’t there. So this is a good reminder to me. Thank you. As to the ‘cover’ photo – it’s all news to me! I don’t know anything about Freshly Pressed or Cover Photos. Yet. 🙂

  3. Thanks for your comment, Michael. I really am happy with WordPress, but was wondering about this selection process. I thought maybe some more seasoned bloggers might have some insight. Thanks for your kind words. I hope you’ll stop by again, soon.

  4. It’s the truth. I have hundreds if not thousands of photos that I’ve taken when the conditions weren’t quite right, only to have them end up in some obscure file never to be seen. But, it never hurts to try. However, when you capture a shot after waiting months, it’s pretty special! Thanks for your comment, missusk76. I hope you’ll stop by again, soon.

  5. I agree with you 100%. I absolutely love blogging on WordPress. It’s such a great outlet for me.

I love how you composed the picture of the cross on the church. It was definitely worth the wait. I myself, many times I have sat and waited or planned for several days, to get the right shot.

I don’t quite understand what you’re talking about, the Fresh Pressed photos problem that is. Maybe I am missing something.

  6. Thanks for stopping by, Bob. Thanks for the kind words in your comment. I’m referring to the photo that WordPress chooses to post with your blog when they put it up on their Freshly Pressed page. If you have multiple shots on your post, they choose one to post as a cover shot. If you look at the blogs listed on their Freshly Pressed page, those photos that are with the blog post are what I’m referring to. They choose one of your shots from the post to use. I don’t know if that helps or not. Oh well. Thanks for your comment!

  36. The posts and photos for Freshly Pressed are actually chosen by a single member of the WordPress team… unfortunately I can’t remember her name. I know she’s wearing a floppy hat in her avatar. She has written in the not-so-distant past that there’s a criteria for choosing posts and photos, but she won’t divulge it. If you head into the WordPress Forum — the link is on the bottom of your Dashboard — and search for “Freshly Pressed” you’ll find out more, it’s actually a pretty common question in there.

Speaking of WordPress… I’m surprised you didn’t chose one of their wider themes to show off your shots. Congratulations, btw, on getting to see real clouds.

  37. Thanks for this info, Gabriel. I know there was something a while back on how they select their featured posts. But, I’ve never seen anything about the general posts and how they are displayed. I’ll check out the forums. I have been thinking about a different template. Can you suggest something that works better for photography? Thanks for stopping by. I really appreciate you help. 38. Found it:

Her name is Joy Victory — yes. Her blog is editor.wordpress.com/ and you can email her at editor@wordpress.com

This is what she wrote about getting into Freshly Pressed:

For themes… 2010 (Twenty Ten) is my favourite, and the one I’m currently using — I love the huge header, and lots of huge columns. Modularity Lite will give you a dark background and lots of space for photos and text. When I had a photo-only blog I found The Journalist v1.9 to be absolutely perfect — really wide main column, usable sidebar and decent page buttons.

But WordPress does make a photo-specific theme that actually changes colour depending on the main colour in the photo. A friend of mine uses it for her photo blog:

This is probably the best WordPress “tips” site, and he has all the tricks laid out for the the Themes:

    Hope it all helps…

  39. Your composition is amazing in all of your shots, however, I was rather amazed when you said this was from Southern California. To capture a shot like this in the way that you did and in Southern California, just shows what type of photographer you are – simply awesome!

I think you have a great camera and know how to use it for sure. I’m one of those guys who takes a hundred pictures and keeps only one. Granted, I won’t spend forever searching through the details of every picture, but I do filter them down and see what I can do with what’s left. I have never taken any photographs as great as your’s though.

As for WordPress and Freshly Pressed, I would check out the forums. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page in your Admin panel, you’ll find forums. Hint: read through the questions and answers of other’s before you decided on whether or not to ask your question in the forums though. I’m sure you can find an answer in there and probably won’t have to ask anyone a question at all.

Good luck in finding your answer and my compliments to you on a wonderful blog in which I will look forward to. I’ve signed up for the email so as not to miss a post and have you on the Readomattic! It’s going to be great getting to know your work.

    Brilliant blog, photography, and posts!
