FRIDAY FAVORITES

Taking anywhere from 500 to 1000 photographs in any given week, I find myself faced with the ever daunting task of digital organization.  In the days of vintage photography where I had a hard copy of every image, it was easy to buy an album and begin to store my photographs in a somewhat organized fashion.  Of course during that era, I never took as many shots as I do now.

In this digital age, it’s easy to download all your images and basically let them land where they may.  Some are pulled into a file for a blog post, while others are destined to travel the vastness of cyberspace on their way to family and friends.  But so many seem to simply find their way into obscurity, locked away into various nooks and crannies of what is commonly known as your hard drive.

Well, those days are over my friend!  (Now, I’m talking to myself – Oh, the pitfalls of blogging!)  I, being the compulsive “Neat Freak” that I am, cannot continue down this path to photoblivion!  (I just made that word up!  It’s a combination of photography and oblivion – photoblivion!  I like it!)

In sorting through some of my files, I thought it might be nice to start something of a Friday tradition that I’m calling Friday Favorites.  Every Friday, I’m going to post the favorite photo of the week.  The particular shot used will be the one chosen by you, the reader!  Of course, I do have strict veto power!  Hey!  I can’t just be throwing any old shot up there.  This is a photography blog, you know.

What’s that?  You say you’ll only vote for the most outstanding photograph?  You say I can trust your judgement?  Hmmm…

OK!  I’ll go strictly by your vote!  In a sense, I’m turning Fridays over to you.  Throughout the week, you may leave a comment indicating your favorite shot.  (Come on, some of you shy people – you’re going to have to leave a comment for this to work.)  On Friday, I’ll tally those comment votes and post the photo for all the world to see.  I know you won’t let me down.

Since I’m starting today and you haven’t had the opportunity to vote, I guess I’ll have to choose the first one.

I came across this shot of “Red” and remembered it was one of my most popular series of posts.  I hope you don’t mind seeing it again.

Thanks for stopping by.  I’m preparing a special post for this weekend.  It will be a very meaningful post for me, and I think you’ll enjoy it as well.  I’ll see you then!

  1. I like the idea, and I like your choice for this week 🙂
I look forward to your Friday Favorites, I suppose it is similar to my project for this year which I call the 2010 Deck (as in a deck of cards), where I choose one photo each week for the 52 weeks of the year, my only criteria being that it must have been taken in the 7 day period 🙂
    Keep Shooting.

  2. WOW, that draggonfly shot is just AMAZING!!!

About organizing photos on the computer… I learned this the hard way, but nowadays when I load my photos from my camera, I name them by date. Today would be: 08-20-10. By doing this, 1. I always know the date the photo was taken, and 2. They file themselves in order that way. I create a folder for each year in “My Pictures”. “My Pictures 2010″… Works for me!

  15. Great idea! I really like it. Thankfully, my camera software downloads everything by date, which works really well until you completely forget what month or even year you took a certain set of photos. I’m still experimenting with how to organize copies of my favorites though.

I’ll have to come back next week to vote!

  20. Great idea! For a reader like myself that is late to the party that is your blog, I thoroughly enjoyed reading all about the ‘Advenuters of Red’! What a wonderful tale and I hope you do get to meet all the “little reds” those two create together!

  22. I like the different angle you took at shooting this dragon fly. I tend to just get a “full body” shot of insects and then curse at them when they fly/walk away. I like this angle because you get the bokeh from behind.

As for digital photo organization, I’m a Mac fan, so I use Aperture 3. I’m not sure if you use it or Lightroom, but I have to say that it’s made my post-processing easier. I basically “flag” all photos I think are suitable for my blog and Flickr, then divide those into a new album to organize them. Then it’s off to my external hard drive AND iPhone, which acts as a great way to carry them with me… since the iPhone syncs well with Aperture, it’s super easy.

Anyway, forgive me if you already do that stuff… but like Barb said, dating is key as well.
