WOULD YOU DO THIS?

In yesterday’s post, I teased you with something that happened on our bike ride last weekend.  The ride we decided to take was a ride made challenging by the rocky cliffs overlooking and even extending into the Pacific Ocean.  As we approached the northernmost point of our ride, we came upon a grouping of cliffs creating a spectacular landscape.  As we scanned the sights, we suddenly noticed some movement at the top of one of the cliffs that was jutting completely out into the Ocean.  The ocean would crash into these cliffs creating an amazing display of waves and spray.  Obviously, this brave group of people wanted to get an even more spectacular view by climbing down from the shoreline cliffs and then scaling the isolated island cliffs further out into the ocean.

As we continued to watch the leisure movements of the sailboats on the horizon, our eyes were mysteriously drawn back to the group of people who had scaled these cliffs.  What were they doing?  There was constant movement.  They seemed to be looking down into the water.  Was something there?  What could it be?  It seemed the waves were growing even more severe as they crashed into the rocky cliffs with such powerful force, creating quite a spray at times.  Is that what was captivating them?

I decided to zoom in closer to determine what was happening.  What I saw next made me gasp!  Without warning, one of the young men stepped up to the edge, turned around and…jumped!

Looking pretty good, so far.

This seems to be beautiful form.  But if you look very closely, you may be able to see a problem.

Now you can clearly see that his form is beginning to break down.  His legs are separating and he’s tilted a bit to the right.

The legs are now even further separated and there’s still a tilt to his form.

He seems to be coming back to center a little, but the legs are clearly out of control. On a side note, I think it’s interesting that no one on the cliffs seems even the least bit interested.

Completing his reverse somersault, he’s finally able to bring his legs together and prepare for his entrance into the water.  I hope he’s timed the wave correctly to provide enough water for a safe landing.

With his legs coming fully together, he is milliseconds from splashdown.

Legs together, a little off-balance, but he looks pretty good at this point.

And…splashdown!

And, into the water.

Maybe the form wasn’t prefect, but the guy’s got guts!  So the question is, would you do this?

Thanks for stopping by.  I’ll see you tomorrow!

  2. NO! I would not!

My sister, brother and a very close friend of mine were almost washed to sea walking along the cliff faces in Newport (I think it was Newport). Anyway, we didn’t pay attention to the tide and a huge wave came up and crashed into us. My little brother was being washed to sea after being ripped off the cliff we had clung to. We looked like crabs hanging there…

The miracle of the day was looking back to see my little 5 ft. tall, 100 pound friend leap back off the wall at the last minute and grab my 12 year old brother out of the water!!! Pure adrenaline power behind that act. She was awesome in action that day!

  7. Definitely not! I’m all for adventure and taking risks. But, there are better ways to get my adrenaline going without risking my life. With that aside, great capture of the dive. Did you have your camera on multi-frame mode? Or do you just have a fast trigger finger?? 🙂

  10. Thanks for sharing this story, Lynda! That would be very scary. A similar incident happened to me with my youngest son when he was about 3 years old. I was holding him when we were caught by a sudden wave and towed under by the rip current it created. I held onto him for dear life until finally we surfaced and we were able to make our way parallel to the shore until we could escape. Very scary! I’m very thankful everything turned out well for both of us.

  33. What you’re asking if I would jump???nooooo way!!! Thanks’ to chicken looks to high and the waves not for me at all.
However my family and I go camping up North in Canada by Grundy Lake and they have smaller cliffs that we have jumped off. I think they are about 5 to 6 meters…into a calm lake, which is plenty high and wild for me.
    soon again
