“I HAVE A DREAM” Part 1

If you were to ask me to summarize my philosophy in one word, it might very well be this one: DREAM!  If I could use two words, it would probably be: DREAM BIG!

As a child, every time my parents would take me to visit a more distant relative or friend I would be faced with the same question.  “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  It seemed like doctor and lawyer were the standard answers.  Of course, there were always those adventurous answers of fireman and policeman (Sorry, we hadn’t learned to call them firefighters and police officers, yet).

Then came the first day of school!  YAY!  Kindergarten.  And what do you suppose was the first thing we did on that very first day?  Yup!  We all sat in a circle and answered that same “age-old” question “…and, what would you like to be when you grow up?”

I can remember very clearly as a child and even as a teenager wanting to be an architect.  I wanted to have an office in my home and carry around those tubes filled with architectural drawings.  I always thought Sam Baldwin was cool.  (Be sure to leave a comment if you figure out that connection)

For some reason as I grew older, people stopped asking me that question.  I guess it was probably out of respect for my age.  Or, maybe they assumed I was living my dream.  But if I were to be honest, I’ve never stopped asking myself that question.  And furthermore, I hope I never do!  I now wonder if that’s even the correct question to be asking.  Maybe the more important question is, “Do we reach an age where we outgrow any opportunity to dream?”  Think about it.  Doesn’t that seem a bit sad?

That would mean whatever I’m doing at this arbitrary age is what I’m destined to do the remainder of my life.  WOW!  What a dream killer!  My father did one thing all of his life.  And, that worked out very well for him.  I can honestly say I never heard my parents talking about my father changing jobs.  But, I’m different.  And I’m guessing some of you may be different, too.  Whether you choose and settle into one career early in your life or you reach a point in your life where you’re open to new and exciting challenges, I don’t believe either is wrong.  Thankfully, everyone is unique and life rarely follows a distinct road map.

My point (I knew you were wondering if I had a point) is this: I currently hold a very nice position at a major university.  And yet that was never, ever my answer to that “age-old” question that was posed to me so often as a child.  I sometimes wonder what my answer to that question would be today.  I guess when that bit of grey hair starts to creep into your temple area, the time for asking that “age-old” question has long since passed.  Or, has it?  (To be continued)

I spent this past Saturday as a photography student – and, I loved every moment of it!!  I was required to submit five of my photographs for professional evaluation prior to the class.  I wanted to present a variety of shots, rather than five similar photos all depicting the same subject category.  With that in mind, these are the five I selected.

If you’ve been following my blog since the beginning, you’ll probably remember these shots as they’ve all appeared in various posts.

I realize I changed gears rather abruptly from the subject matter to the photos I posted.  That’s because I decided I would need to finish this post at a later date.  So if you stop by tomorrow, I’ll be sharing Part 2, which will hopefully help us face that question once again no matter what your age may be.

Thanks for stopping by.  I’ll see you tomorrow.

  1. Great post today!! Most of my life, I’ve had NO idea what I wanted to be when I “grow up”. I stopped going to college and entered the work force at a relatively young age, because I had NO idea what I wanted to study! If I could go back and start over, yes, I would definitely study photography… but I didn’t know that then. Right now, I’m enjoying learning on my own!!

BTW – “Sam Baldwin”, “Sleepless In Seattle”. Good reference!

  2. Wow! You are extremely quick with your Sleepless in Seattle knowledge – very impressive, Holly! This is why I started this blog and wrote today’s post. I hope you’ll stay tuned! Thank you for leaving this comment. It’s exactly why I believe comments are so important to the overall context of each post! I hope you’ll stop by tomorrow for Part 2!

  3. I know to some, they cannot relate. But when I grow up….I want to be a child of God. Because as I move, live, and have my being, I realize it is God who brings all my gifts and callings to a place, where sometimes I have to reinvent myself. And when I see, I am his child….Life becomes fresh, and sweet, even innocent. I can see things through his eyes. Thats why I love photography. Lately, I see I am changing….but he is not.

Thanks for your perspective. You have a gift to inspire others. I see it so clearly in you, and I have never ever met you….But you have a beautiful gift. It shines!

  4. I love the one with the cross!
I do understand about your subject “Dream.” I worked for years at a major university and I loved my job. But I always wanted to be an author. I’ve been telling and writing stories since I was a little girl. You can imagine how excited I was when I got my first novel published. Now that I’m retired from the university I should write more. I’m working on a new Southern Drama Novel but I’m also dragging my feet. Maybe I’m feeling lazy but there are so many other things that I’m doing right now I don’t write as often as I should. But my point is, keeping dreaming! We are never too old to dream and pursue that dream.

  6. I would have replaced the drgon-fly photo with that awesome mosaic cut-glass dome photo. But that’s just me. 🙂

By the way, I am 76 years old and I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. 🙂

  8. Congratulations on your writing success, Gwyn! That is very exciting. Dreaming is so important. But, I also have to continue to remind myself that it is only the first step! You have to develop a plan to achieve those dreams, as well! We’ll talk about that soon, too! Thank you for your kind comment. I hope you’ll stop by again, soon.

  9. Gwyn, do you know the shot of the church with the cross against that painted blue sky took me 3 months to capture? I drove by this church nearly every day, walking around it taking some test shots, exploring different angles. But, the sky was never right for the shot I wanted. It was either too grey, or blue with no clouds, or brownish from the smog. tehre was always something that prevented the shot I wanted. But then, after about 2-3 months of disappointment – this sky appeared and this shot was born! I’m glad you like it. PS…the church has negotiated the rights to use the picture in all of their marketing.

I always DREAM and I don’t think we ever outgrow the opportunity to Dream. I keep wondering when I will ever stop having a larger vision for my future. I guess NEVER. I enjoy reading your posts.

  15. Ah, how interesting that you’ve written this post on this day. I’m having a difficult time with the what I want to be right now. I’ve known for a long time I wanted to be teacher, went to college for it, got the certification for it. Timing never worked out for me to be hired in a classroom of my own. Been working as an aide for the last 5 years; today happened to be the day that I found out another candidate was chosen over me for a teaching position that I interviewed for. We tell our children, you can be whatever you want to be when you grow up – now I find myself wondering if it is actually true.

  20. I like to live my life with a simple philosophy. You try your best to plan what you want to do, but you never really know where life will take you. I hear countless stories of people who end up landing jobs that are completely unrelated to their university degrees and their aspirations during youth.

Actually, I’m more amazed that you remember your first day at kindergarten…. =P
