NOW GO OUT THERE AND HAVE SOME FUN!
This is going to be a very interesting post today, in that I photographed every shot here with the whimsical idea of just having fun! Every day I go out into his world and look for great photography shots to capture, always hoping for that one spectacular photo that will become a treasured piece of art.
I didn’t want that today! No, I said, “Today I want to have fun – do something different!” Not that I don’t thoroughly enjoy all photography. But, I didn’t want to have to think about composition or camera settings and lighting. Although, I quickly discovered one has to give attention to such things. But, you can vary the norm and that’s what I wanted to do today. I was going to look through the viewfinder and if I liked what I saw, then I was going to change it to something I wouldn’t normally see or shoot!
So, off to my neighborhood Armstrong’s Nursery to photograph some flora. And, here are the results!
This first shot is a flower I would have normally passed by. The petals seemed to have a browned out, somewhat drab section near the bloom center. Then I stopped. I would normally pass this by. So, today I’ll shoot it. As it turns out, the browned out sections actually create a somewhat unique pattern.
For this red cactus bloom shot below, I would never have created such a shallow depth of field. But when I did, it looked rather abstract through the viewfinder.
Walking down the next row of plants, I came upon this mysterious looking succulent with a draping of white thread-like covering intertwined with each leaf. Again, I shallowed up the depth of field to create a fog-like atmosphere.
This little burst of color definitely caught my eye next! For this shot, I zoomed into the deepest part of the center and blurred the edges again with my aperture setting. Normally, I would have focused the entire bloom and probably just blurred the background. Not today!
Now, this little guy just totally captivated me with his tentacle-like extensions. And, he was so tiny! I immediately saw the possibilities of an out-of-focus shot! I could see almost a satin-like effect as it would appear very soft against the dark background. For this effect, I simply adjusted the focus to where everything was slightly blurred. No, even if you squint you won’t be able to bring it into focus. I would have never done this on a normal day! But this day was anything but normal!
OK, so I got a little more traditional on this shot. But, I still like the striping effect of the petals.
You may hate them – you may love them. Honestly, I’m not quite sure how I feel about them either. But, I sure had fun with this photography diversion!
My advice to you photographers out there: Go out and have some fun! Change it up a little! Shoot something you wouldn’t normally shoot and in a way you would never consider shooting it…until today!
Thanks for stopping by. I’ll see you tomorrow!
I like your decision to stop and photograph the flower you normally would have passed by. it’s that kind of open-minded approach that keeps photography enjoyable and interesting

WOW. Amazing shots! I love the first for the uniqueness of the petals and the third for what you describe as a fog like atmosphere.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving this comment, fir! Sometimes one can get too wrapped up in the elements and too little into the enjoyment. I don’t want that to happen to me. And, it was fun! I hope you’ll stop by again.

The first shot was actually my first shot of the day, Sandra. And, I really did pass it by intially. But, then I stopped myself and went back to take a shot. I’m glad I did! I really think I could work a little with some processing effects and make some of these even better – may do that later. Thanks for leaving this comment. I really appreciate it.

What I find interesting is that I tend to find myself taking shots like these – and I would generally full-object shots. But I like seeing pictures in that style and you’ve commented on a few of my pictures. (: It’s just something I noticed.

I think that’s the beauty of photography, Amy! One person photographs a flower using a macro lens, while another uses a zoom, while still another uses a wide angle. One shoots close-up with tremendous detail, while another shoots the bloom filling the frame, and still another captures the entire flower bloom or even the entire flower field. And they can all be excellent photographs and I more often than not will like them all. thank you for stopping by today and left this comment. I hope you’ll come back again, soon!

I am glad you decided to shoot for fun, you have definitely found some beautifully captured moments! I really like the third image down, the “draping of white thread-like covering intertwined with each leaf” image. 😀

Everyone should do more shooting for the fun of it! I’ve enjoyed your recent macro pictures, you’ve got a good eye for it. These seem a little soft, which could be deliberate, or due to the resizing. Anyway, great shots!

I did rather enjoy shooting these, Journey! I purposely softened them up because that was something I wouldn’t normally do. I’ve found that if I don’t change it up from time to time, I’ll fall into a pattern and everything I shoot will begin to look the same. Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you’ll visit again.

AMEN! Thanks so much for the reminder. I, for one, have been so caught up in ‘getting the perfect shot’ that I’ve forgotten to just have fun and that not ALL shots have to be worthy of a gallery. So much so, that I’ve NOT picked up the camera thinking ‘why bother’. I admire your enthusiasm and your resutling shots are just beautiful!

I’m dying for the weather to improve here in the desert. We’ve had record highs for the last three days: 108-ish. Just too hot for any real walking around outside. Pretty soon, though. I’m optimistic. Then I’ll spend hours and hours at the Desert Botanical Garden. Can’t wait. Keep your fingers crossed for a break in this summer heat. Beautiful shots. Just beautiful.

Sorry I am late commenting on this post. I was out photographing water lilies almost all day yesterday. But I like your 3rd and 5th image the best. I love that ethereal effect you obtained. A very nice softness. And, by the way, I admire the way you just use your imagination and let the creative juices flow.
I think that I left some info out of my post with the water lilies. I used my 100-400mm lens on all the shots. Because I like to bring out the tonalities of blossoms a bit more, I almost always set the EV at minus 1/3. It is surprising how much detail you can bring out of the highlights.
