A SUNSET IS A SUNSET IS A…NO WAY! EVERY SUNSET IS DIFFERENT!!

Southern California has experienced an unusual moisture pattern for the last 12 days.  It seems it has rained, drizzled, misted, or precipitated in some form for so many days some were wondering if they were in the UK!  There must be a reason for all this rain.  Me?  I just enjoy it even if I have to be out in it.  It’s great!!  But, I’m going to go out on a limb here to say, I think it’s nearly over.  Something tells me the rain has served its purpose and will be ending soon.

Over the weekend there was an ever so short break in this particular weather pattern right around sunset!  Seeing the break in the clouds, I didn’t waste an instant grabbing my camera and heading to the beach for some shots of what seemed to be shaping up as a great sunset.  Not that there’s any bad sunsets!  But lately, there hadn’t been any sunsets at all.

Parking the car, I nearly ran to the sand to get in position before the sun dipped too low to capture any color.

This is what I saw that evening!  With Ruby’s Diner perched at the end, the Huntington beach Pier basks in the warmth of the sunset colors.

Now here’s an amusing tale.  While taking this shot, a rogue wave came ashore and nearly drenched me.  Luckily, I just noticed it in my peripheral vision with barely enough time to scoot out of its reach.  I was shooting these shots from the water’s edge.  Have you ever gotten so involved in your photography that you actually lost sight of what was happening around you?

Happens to me all the time!

This last shot includes a well-timed surfer heading out for some of the better waves which seem to always rise up in the early evening.

While photographing these sunsets, I nearly missed the full moon that had sneaked up behind me.  But, I did finally turn around and captured it.  Even though I didn’t have an opportunity to compose a good shot, I still posted it here.  It was one of those times when you just have to take what you get.

On my way back to the car, I decided to shoot some spontaneous night shots.  I’ll post those next time.

Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Wow, beautiful sunsets! The first is my favourite, too, the composition is great with the silhouette of the pier and the bright fiery sky. I like the one with the surfer, too.
    Well done!

  4. Wonderful light and colors. I love the one with the surfer. It looks as though the light and color moved to the sand by the surfer.

  8. Thanks, Robin. When I saw the surfer come to the water, I thought…why not add him into the foreground? I tried to put him right in the reflection – which I did. But, his hand has kind of a “funky” look to it. Maybe I should have asked him if he would mind going back and walking past me again! LOL!!

  11. The sunset shots are awesome. I catch some here in Florida also. I love your daily post and look forward to reading them. I can’t get into my wordpress to post because I changed the theme and it seems this new one doesn’t have my dropdowns so I can add new post. Go figure. I should have noticed that before I switched but I didn’t. I’m trying to figure out what to do. Have a blessed day and keep sending those post.
    God Bless.

  15. Thanks, Abe! I’m so glad you stopped by today. I thought the surfer was a lucky break. I would like to eventually have some surfers work with me to get a little better pose. But, when I only had one shot – I’m happy to take what I can get. I hope you’ll come back again.

  24. Love the sunset pictures and I have to laugh because when we were in Maui this summer, I was doing much the same thing when my cell phone met its demise by a rogue wave. I used the same word to describe to my friends what had happened to my cell phone and they all laughed at me when I described it as “the rogue wave.” I wonder if it could have been the same rogue wave that nearly drenched you. Just glad that our rogue waves didn’t get the camera equipment.

  26. It was a “rogue wave” Catherine! I’ll back you up on that one! That’s what I was most concerned about – the camera. It didn’t really matter if it drenched me – I’ll dry off and be fine. Thanks for stopping by and sharing this comment.
