IS IT ARTSY? OR IS IT OVERKILL?
If there’s one thing you’re quickly learning about me, it’s the fact that I’m adventurous!! I’m not afraid to take risks!! I’ve posted several images on this blog for the specific purpose of gaining your evaluations. And, I’m grateful for those evaluations because you have steered me away from certain images and toward others.
So, I hope you won’t grow bored with another image that I’ve edited in an attempt to bring a unique style to some of my photography. In this image, I’ve added some layering that has created a completely different appearance. But that can be good or bad, I suppose. I also realize that sometimes you can do too much with an image that is far better in a more traditional presentation.
OK, take a look (I know – you’ve already sneaked a peek) and tell me what you think.
Here’s the beauty: you don’t have to know anything about photography or the editing process in order to share your opinion.

I purposely didn’t post the original image because I wasn’t necessarily seeking a comparison. But if you feel you would like to see it, all you’ll need to do is scroll back to a post about a week ago.

Steve, I have to be honest it didn’t grab me. HOWEVER…
I loved it when I zoomed in on the pier’s middle section. Very graphic arts looking!
I am imagining just the very middle section of the photo with or without the buildings on the right. But mostly I am loving that mid-section! ~ Lynda

Steve, YES! That’s it exactly, because when you center in on the pier and explode the view it looks like a woodblock print that has been water colored. Suddenly the people get real interesting and THEN the look is quite artsy!!! I think it is beautiful!

I don’t think it’s overkill at all Steve. The best part of photography and for that matter post processing is to find your niche. Secondly, the only person that really has to be pleased with your work is you!! So kill away my friend. You’ll never know what might have been if you don’t try.

I like Mike’s perspective. I’ll add – it’s your style, you can develope it, you are the artist, it’s your canvas. “Can’t please all” as the saying goes. Are you sure you haven’t sold anything yet? You sold me. Don’t take it personal, the economy has an impact on artists.

That’s really what I’m trying to do, Mike. I have all of the sunset images (well, I continue to capture those because they’re all so different) just like everyone other photographer. But, I’m really trying to discover image edits that will cause my prints to “stand out” from the ordinary!! Yes, finding my niche!! That one element that sets me apart.

Hi Martina. Thanks for continuing this conversation! I really think you have a lot to add! I haven’t offered any of my prints for sale as yet. I’m building my inventory as quickly as possible and laying the ground work for a near future “Burst onto the Scene” type of event!!

Hi Steve. To be honest, when I looked at the small version, I really didn’t care for it, but after looking at the full size, I am torn. For the full image, I think that the majority of the sky is a deal breaker for me. I don’t think that the processing really works for the upper 2//3 of the sky. However that same processing works well for the pier and ocean. I’ve used a similar technique on some of my images, but in the end it matters if you are happy with it. Like the saying goes “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”

I like it! I’m not sure just what the difference is but it seems brighter. The lights and/or setting sun are a brighter reflection on the water and beach.
