I’ve been contemplating the purchase of a new lens, the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS II.  Since I’ve been hired to photograph some of the high school sporting events for the paper and their yearbook, I thought this might be a great opportunity to experiment with this highly touted Canon lens.

After the game, I wanted to really see what this lens would do with a close up portrait.

I’m pretty amazed not only at the speed of the lens, but the way that it snaps into focus.  Very fast!

This image has very little editing.  It was necessary to crop it just a bit, and I added a vignette to bring the attention to the model.

Now I’m looking for your feedback:

  • If you have experience with this lens – how would you rate it?  Would you recommend it?
  • What would you say is the age of my model?

  1. Steve, that lens is probably one the best that Canon ever produced. It is awesome. I would rate it at AAAAAAA. Yes, I heartily recommend it. And, I wouldn’t ever try to guess the age of any lady.

But I can see that was right, you are cut out for portrait photography. 🙂

  2. Thanks, Bob…for your assessment of the lens and your kind words. I have heard nothing but great remarks from those who have it and use it. Oh, and you’re a very, very wise man! 🙂

  3. The 70-200 is an amazing lens for portraits…you know I like my macro lens’ but I’ve used this lens and absolutely LOVE it 🙂
